WHAT WE'RE GONNA TALK

Just like in a cafe, we talk about everything. Nothing heavy. Just talk over a cup of coffee.

BY FOCUSING IN READING BOOKS MAKES ME LESS BUSY

Six months ago, I found myself drowning in a flood of easy information. The internet—and all the lovely things on it, things like Wikipedia, Twitter, podcasts, the New Yorker, email, TED Talks, Facebook, Youtube, Buzzfeed occasionally, and yes, even the Harvard Business Review—provide unlimited sources of delight at the touch of a finger.

A LITTLE JOLT OF ELECTRICITY WILL BOOST PEOPLE'S CREATIVITY

ShutterstuckNeed some creative, out-of-the box ideas? Try adding a little jolt to your next brainstorming session.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill have found that stimulating the brain with electrical impulses boosts creativity. The impulses, researchers say, activated specific brain waves associated with originative thinking, and people who were buzzed scored significantly higher on a test of creative thought.

Time to kiss writer’s block goodbye.

NY WORLD TRADE CENTRE NEW LOGO

The new logo for the World Trade Center in New York City has been revealed—it is the result of a US$3.57 million branding project that was undertaken by Landor Associates.

Considering the historical significance of the site, the logo is rather unsurprisingly brimming with meaning and references—however, according to Fast Co. Design, it is more “confusing” than poetic.

BEIJING FROM THE SKY (video)

The Forbidden City From AboveBefore I tell you the story of being detained by the Chinese (and, like Taborlin the Great, I similarly did not have key, coin, or candle), I’ll share the video I made! I would have gotten even more footage had the quadcopter not been, ahem, confiscated… BTW, I recommend running the video in HD mode with earphones!

MATHEMATICAL EQUATION AS FORMULA FOR HAPPINESS (video)

What makes people happy? Finding a definitive answer to this question could certainly make someone very rich (butwhether that would in turn make them happy is another matter). The problem is that happiness is especially slippery. While we know much about the consequences of happiness – that it can improve our health and well-being and how we get on in the world – much less in known about its causes, let alone how to guarantee its appearance.

Making happiness a goal, for example, often has counter-productive consequences that ultimately lead to less happiness overall. Finding happiness is, for many, akin to divining water: when we do find it we are often at a loss to explain how it happened.

A GHOST IN THE FAMOUS PICASSO PAINTING

Picasso's "the blue room"

Pablo Picasso's famous painting of a bathing woman in a blue room carries a secret: High-tech scans have revealed that the well-known scene was painted on top of a portrait of an unidentified man.

Conservators here at the Phillips Collection used infrared imaging to virtually peel back the paint of the artist's famous 1901 painting "The Blue Room"; underneath, they discovered a portrait of a man in a bow tie, resting his head on his arm. Live Science visited the collection for a behind-the-scenes look at how the discovery was made.

POSING CAN BOOST OUR CONFIDENCE (video)

Amy Cuddy demonstrates a classic power pose, used my humans and chimps alike—spreading your arms wide to appear more powerful. Photo: James Duncan DavidsonThere’s one very important thing that everyone should do before heading into a JOB INTERVIEW, giving a big speech or attempting an athletic feat. According to Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist at Harvard Business School, everyone should spend two minutes power posing. What, you ask, is power posing? It is adopting the stances associated with confidence, power and achievement — chest lifted, head held high, arms either up or propped on the hips.

MANNY ROTH, THE OWNER OF CAFE WHA? DIES AT 94

Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village 1967.
“Just got here from the West,” the gangly 19-year-old told Manny Roth, owner of the Greenwich Village nightclub “Cafe Wha?” “Name’s Bob Dylan. I’d like to do a few songs? Can I?”

Sure, Mr. Roth said; on “hootenanny” nights, as he called them, anybody could sing a song or two, and this was a hootenanny night, a bitterly cold one, Jan. 24, 1961. And so Mr. Dylan took out his guitar and sang a handful of Woody Guthrie songs.

The crowd “flipped” in excitement, Mr. Dylan later said.

15 GREAT LIFE ADVICES FROM COMMON PEOPLE

The great benefit of living with, working for, or being related to people who have experienced more of life than you have is picking their brain for advice.

The most effective people learn from their own mistakes, and make a significant effort to learn from other people’s errors as well.

A recent Quora thread asked users for the best advice they’ve ever gotten.

THE POWER OF STORY

Some people have a way of making the complex clear.  They know who they are, why they do what they do, and where they want to go. Because they have internalized all this, they are able to sharply crystallize ideas and vision. They speak in simple, relatable terms. And they can get a lot accomplished.

HIGHLY CREATIVE PEOPLE DO 18 THINGS DIFFERENTLY

Creativity works in mysterious and often paradoxical ways. Creative thinking is a stable, defining characteristic in some personalities, but it may also change based on situation and context. Inspiration and ideas often arise seemingly out of nowhere and then fail to show up when we most need them, and creative thinking requires complex cognition yet is completely distinct from the thinking process.

WISDOM IS ACTION, NOT UNDERSTANDING

What, exactly, is wisdom, and where does it come from? As to the first question, I would argue this: wisdom is a belief that's not only true but that in the fact of our believing it leads us to feel and act in such a way that makes us suffer less or feel joy more. A common misconception is that wisdom is contained in words. But an exchange I witnessed years ago between a counselor, Darren, and a group of patients illustrates how wisdom really exists only in action:

THE SPATIAL THINKING

In its 375 years, Harvard has only ever eliminated one entire academic program. If you had to guess, what program do you think that was and when was it killed off?

The answer: Harvard eradicated its Geography Department in the 1940s, and many universities followed suit.

WARHOL SKETCH: BOUGHT ONLY $5, SALE FOR $1,9M

It's one of those stories that makes you want to run to your nearest rummage or garage sale and find that one-in-a-million long-lost art work to buy cheap and sell for millions.

A 49-year-old man found an unimpressive sketch portrait in 2010 at an estate sale in Las Vegas.

The sketch was not particularly impressive or noteworthy, but for the signature in the bottom right corner that reads "Andy Warhol."

ELON MUSK: NY TO LA IN 45 MINUTES (video)

Elon Musk wants to revolutionize transportation. Again. The serial entrepreneur envisions a future where mag-lev trains in enormous pneumatic tubes whisk us from Los Angeles to New York in 45 minutes. Need to be in Beijing tomorrow? No problem. It’s a two-hour ride away.

As crazy as it sounds, Musk is merely updating an idea that’s been around since the early 1900s, and at least one company is working on a functional prototype. But according to Wired sources, his involvement won’t be nearly as hands-on as Musk’s other endeavors at Tesla Motors and SpaceX.

The engineering behind the Hyperloop is similar to the old-school pneumatic tube systems used by banks to suck your deposit to the teller at the drive-through. But naturally, it’s more complicated than that.

5 LESSONS I LEARN FROM BOXING RING

At the age of 22 I was forced to quit college basketball due to a knee injury. Soon after I dropped out and joined the workforce. I hadn’t yet thought of my company, even toyed with writing, or had any clue what I wanted to do with my life, except one thing:

PREVENT DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER BY DELAYING RETIREMENT

A new study in France has found that people who delay retirement are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease or other kinds of dementia.

The Washington Post reported that this study, which was presented Monday at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Boston, has been the largest one to look at this issue. Nearly half a million people participated in order for the researchers to come to this conclusion.

Carole Dufouil, a scientist for the French government, and leader of the study said, "For each additional year of work, the risk of getting dementia is reduced by 3.2 percent."
