THE HEALING SOUND OF MUSIC

Stress kills. Music offers us relief from stress in many ways. It helps us to open ourselves emotionally and let loose with feelings that may be causing disease. It inspires us to examine ourselves, our lives and our relationships. Through our mind and emotion, music can reduce stress.

GET UP WITH A SMILE, EVERY TIME YOU ARE KNOCKED DOWN

Take personal responsibility and take control of your destiny.

Why is it that some people are so alive and joyful while others are drab and lifeless? This is something we all know, yet never talk about. What makes some people seem fibrantly alive and others seem so lifeless and drab?

Look to nature for answers. One example is the emperor moth, which, with its wide wingspan, is the most majestic of all the moths. Its wide wings span out majestically when it flies.  Before it can become a full-grown moth, it has to be a pupa in a cocoon.

LIFE IS A JIGSAW PUZZLE

Life is a jigsaw puzzle
It's not always fun and games
Life is what you make of it
And nothing ever remains the same

Life can test your courage
It can test your inner strength to endure
It can test your mental psyche
Life is a challenge for sure

FOR HEALTHY EATING, BITTER IS BETTER

[FOOD1]A food developer urges resisting sweet lures and braving taste shocks, new cuisines and despised dishes

As someone who develops new food products, I've been a professional taster for 16 years. I love my job, but I'm constantly frustrated by the unwillingness of most Americans to try foods that challenge their palates.

The tongue is a unique muscle. The best way to exercise it, if you want to make the most difference to your waistline, is not to flex or fatigue it, but to stretch it. Expanding our repertoire of foods isn't just about exploration and new pleasures. It's also the first step toward eating a broader, healthier diet.

THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: 75 YEARS OF THE WORLD WONDER

On May 27, 1937, the public for the first time could drive, walk, or bicycle directly from San Francisco to Marin County in the north. Now, 110,000 cars pass over the bridge a day.

It's one of the wonders of the world, and one of the most photographed things on the planet. And this Sunday, the Golden Gate Bridge turns 75.

10 QUALITIES OF A LEADER

Leaders are both born and made. See if you have what it takes to be a manager, and what you can do to improve the skills you already have.

10 Qualities of a Leader—and How to Acquire Them

Managers don't become leaders overnight. Even “born” leaders don’t start out possessing all these skills. To be a strong leader, you need to:

THE MIRACLE BABY

I had just turned 19 when I was told I could not have children. I was devastated. Ever since I was a small child, I had prayed for a beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed baby girl. I used to pray to God that before He decided to come back for His children, He would allow me to have a baby girl.

I was in a serious relationship at the time that I thought would last forever. He told me that he would love nothing more than to have a child to care for and love. I prayed that the doctors were wrong and that maybe if I prayed hard enough, God would prove them wrong.

EXERCISE SLOWS MUSCLE WASTING FROM AGE & HEART FAILURE

Exercise can counteract muscle breakdown, increase strength and reduce inflammation caused by aging and heart failure, according to new research in Circulation, an American Heart Association journal.

The benefits for heart failure patients are similar to those for anyone who exercises: there's less muscle-wasting, and their bodies become conditioned to handle more exercise.

Age of the patients didn't matter, either, researchers found.

"Many physicians -- and insurance companies -- still believe that cardiac rehabilitation does not really help in old age. This study clearly falsifies this belief," said Stephan Gielen, M.D., lead co-author and Deputy Director of Cardiology at the University Hospital, Martin-Luther-University of Halle, Germany.

HOW TO USE VISUAL TO PRIME YOUR IMAGINATION

Experimental social psychologists have conducted numerous experiments that demonstrate how behavior and performance can be "primed" by showing participants certain objects and pictures. In one study, participants who were primed with pictures associated with business - such as briefcases, pens, pictures of people dressed in business clothes, commuter trains, and so on - became more competitive. The social psychologist Michael Slepian and colleagues at Tufts University noticed during a study on "bright ideas" that participants became more insightful and creative when they were primed with an exposed light bulb. In short, they found that even exposure to an illuminating light bulb primes creativity.

9 THINGS WILL DISAPPEAR IN OUR LIFETIME

Believe it or not, the following 9 Things Will Disappear In Our Lifetime. Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come.

1. The Post Office
Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.

GOD'S WIFE

On a cold day in December, a little boy, about 10 years, old was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the boy and said, "My little fellow, why are you looking so earnestly in that window?"

THE ART OF STORYBOARDING WITH RIDLEY SCOTT

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS THAT KILL CREATIVE THINKING

SIN ONE.
WE DO NOT BELIEVE WE ARE CREATIVE

People do not believe they are creative. We have been taught that we are the product of our genes, our parents, our family history, our personal history, our I.Q., and our education. Consequently, we have been conditioned to have a fixed mindset about creativity and believe only a select few are born creative and the rest not. Because we believe we are not creative, we spend our lives observing only those things in our experiences that confirm this belief. We spend our lives knowing and living within the limitations we believe we have. We listen to our "inner" voice that keeps telling us not to pretend to be something we're not.

Engineer: Star Trek's Enterprise ship could be built in 20 years at a cost of $1 trillion
Whether you're a Trekkie or not, you have to admit that there's some sense of wonder to exploring the stars and trying to find life on distant planets. Of course, the U.S.S. Enterprise is a fictional ship, but have you ever put in the thought as to what it would take to actually build it, and when we could get it done if we really put in the effort? The man behind the well-researched site buildtheenterprise.org has, and he's determined that a fully functional Enterprise is only 20 years away if we put in the effort.

COFFEE DRINKING LINKED TO LONGER LIFE

Coffee contains some 1,000 compounds, many of which are health-promoting antioxidants.
Drinking a daily cup of coffee -- or even several cups -- isn't likely to harm your health, and it may even lower your risk of dying from chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests.

The relationship between coffee drinking and health has been a hot topic in recent years, but research has produced mixed results.

WHITE RICE INCREASES RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES

The authors from the Harvard School of Public Health look at previous studies and evidence of the association between eating white rice and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Their study seeks to determine whether this risk is dependent on the amount of rice consumed and if the association is stronger for the Asian population, who tend to eat more white rice than the Western world.

The authors analysed the results of four studies: two in Asian countries (China and Japan) and two in Western countries (USA and Australia). All participants were diabetes free at study baseline.

REPLACING WHITE RICE WITH BROWN RICE OR OTHER WHOLE GRAINS MAY REDUCE DIABETES RISK

In a new study, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) have found that eating five or more servings of white rice per week was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In contrast, eating two or more servings of brown rice per week was associated with a lower risk of the disease.

The researchers estimated that replacing 50 grams of white rice (just one third of a typical daily serving) with the same amount of brown rice would lower risk of type 2 diabetes by 16%. The same replacement with other whole grains, such as whole wheat and barley, was associated with a 36% reduced risk.

WILL YOU HELP ME TIE THE STRING OF MY STRAW SANDAL?

Ryokan devoted his life to the study of Zen. One day he heard that his nephew, despite the admonitions of relatives, was spending his money on a courtesan. Inasmuch as the nephew had taken Ryokan's place in managing the family estate and the property was in danger of being dissipated, the relatives asked Ryoken to do something about it.

Ryokan had to travel a long way to visit his nephew, whom he had not seen for many years. The nephew seemed pleased to meet his uncle again and invited him to remain overnight.

EATING FAST INCREASES DIABETES RISK

People who wolf down their food are two and a half times more likely to suffer from type 2 diabetes than those who take their time according to new research presented at the joint International Congress of Endocrinology and European Congress of Endocrinology in Florence, Italy.

While numerous studies have linked eating quickly to overeating and obesity, this is the first time eating speed has been identified as an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

New discoveries unearthed at an ancient frontier wall in Iran provide compelling evidence that the Persians matched the Romans for military might and engineering prowess.

The 'Great Wall of Gorgan'in north-eastern Iran, a barrier of awesome scale and sophistication, including over 30 military forts, an aqueduct, and water channels along its route, is being explored by an international team of archaeologists from Iran and the Universities of Edinburgh and Durham. This vast Wall-also known as the 'Red Snake'-is more than 1000 years older than the Great Wall of China, and longer than Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall put together.

WALK AND SMILE

I enjoy taking a walk. It is a great way to exercise, a wonderful way to see things at a slower pace, and an opportunity to meet people. Often, during a walk, meeting people is nothing more than a smile and a quick "Hi", but the reactions are as wide, and some as barren, as the Arctic.

THE SECRETS OF AN ANCIENT TEL AVIV FORTRESS

New archeological research from the Tel Qudadi archaeological dig near Tel Aviv suggests an ancient link between the Israeli city and the Greek island of Lesbos -- a find producing new insights into alliances and trade routes in the ancient world.

Tel Qudadi, an ancient fortress located in the heart of Tel Aviv at the mouth of the Yarkon River, was first excavated more than 70 years ago -- but the final results of neither the excavations nor the finds were ever published. Now, research on Tel Qudadi by archaeologists at Tel Aviv University has unpeeled a new layer of history, indicating that there is much more to learn from the site, including evidence that links ancient Israel to the Greek island of Lesbos.

PROLONGED TV VIEWING LINKED TO INCREASED RISK OF TYPE TWO DIABETES, CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Watching television is the most common daily activity apart from work and sleep in many parts of the world, but it is time for people to change their viewing habits. According to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers, prolonged TV viewing was associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature death.

THE VOICE OF TRUE HAPPINESS

After Bankei had passed away, a blind man who lived near the master's temple told a friend: "Since I am blind, I cannot watch a person's face, so I must judge his character by the sound of his voice. Ordinarily when I hear someone congratulate another upon his happiness or success, I also hear a secret tone of envy. When condolence is expressed for the misfortune of another, I hear pleasure and satisfaction, as if the one condoling was really glad there was something left to gain in his own world.

GESTURES HAVE A BIG ROLE IN LANGUAGE

People of all ages and cultures gesture while speaking, some much more noticeably than others. But is gesturing uniquely tied to speech, or is it, rather, processed by the brain like any other manual action?

A U.S.-Netherlands research collaboration delving into this tie discovered that actual actions on objects, such as physically stirring a spoon in a cup, have less of an impact on the brain's understanding of speech than simply gesturing as if stirring a spoon in a cup. This is surprising because there is less visual information contained in gestures than in actual actions on objects. In short: Less may actually be more when it comes to gestures and actions in terms of understanding language.

TV WHICH HAVE UNLIMITED CHANNELS

We get a gift of a brand new Magical TV which has unlimited access to all the beautiful channels. When we tune in to any one of the millions of stations, we become embraced with wonderful joy filled feelings. We are given a remote control and can instantly connect to all the marvelous programs at will.

We are really enjoying switching channels and experiencing lots of happy days. Time progresses and the remote control is not working as well. We can no longer get our favorite channels and the ones we can get we really do not care for. A little later even the programs we tolerate start to get distorted. The signals become weak and there is a lot of interference. The TV has trouble getting enough electric power as the tube is getting worn out working so hard to connect to even the mediocre stations. The magic has now gone out of the TV set and the tube fades away. The power source can no longer travel inside the set as the receiver has extinguished itself.

MURAL FOUND ON WALLS: MAYA CALENDAR REACHING BEYOND 2012

A vast city built by the ancient Maya and discovered nearly a century ago is finally starting to yield its secrets.

Excavating for the first time in the sprawling complex of Xultún in Guatemala's Petén region, archaeologists have uncovered a structure that contains what appears to be a work space for the town's scribe, its walls adorned with unique paintings -- one depicting a lineup of men in black uniforms -- and hundreds of scrawled numbers. Many are calculations relating to the Maya calendar.

"SOCIAL JETLAG" POSES OBESITY HEALTH HAZARD

Social jetlag -- a syndrome related to the mismatch between the body's internal clock and the realities of our daily schedules -- does more than make us sleepy. It is also contributing to the growing tide of obesity, according to a large-scale epidemiological study reported online on May 10 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication.

GARLIC MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ANTIBIOTICS AGAINST FOOD POISONING BACTERIA

If you feel ill because of food poisoning you may not feel like eating it, but garlic has been proven to be more effective than antibiotics in fighting the effects of food poisoning bugs. The active compound, diallyl sulphide, is able to breach the membranes on many bacteria that make them harder to destroy.

SAVED BY THE HAND OF GOD

I was a freshman in college in a foreign land. The place was Costa Rica and what a breathtaking place it was. For the first time in my life I was able to see tropical rain forests, mighty rivers and most impressively active volcanoes.

It was a Sabbath afternoon when some of my friends and I decided to go to the Poas Volcano. We spent the afternoon looking down into the majestic crater which is about a mile in diameter. My best friend and I thought it would be exciting to take a closer look.

BOKKEN

A bokken (木剣, bok(u), "wood", and ken, "sword") (or commonly as bokutō 木刀 in Japan), is a Japanese wooden sword used for training. It is usually the size and shape of a katana, but is sometimes shaped like other swords, such as the wakizashi and tantō. Some ornamental bokken are decorated with mother-of-pearl work and elaborate carvings.

THE SOLDIERS OF HUMANITY

Once a division of the Japanese army was engaged in a sham battle, and some of the officers found it necessary to make their headquarters in Gasan's temple.

Gasan told his cook: "Let the officers have only the same simple fare we eat."

This made the army men angry, as they wre used to very deferential treatment. One came to Gasan and said: "Who do you think we are? We are soldiers, sacrificing our lives for our country. Why don't you treat us accordingly?"

Gasan answered sternly: "Who do you think we are? We are soldiers of humanity, aiming to save all sentient beings."

VIDAL SASSOON DIES AT 84

Vidal Sassoon used his hairstyling shears to free women from beehives and hot rollers and give them wash-and-wear cuts that made him an international name in hair care.

When he came on the scene in the 1950s, hair was high and heavy — typically curled, teased, piled and shellacked into place. Then came the 1960s, and Sassoon's creative cuts, which required little styling and fell into place perfectly every time, fit right in with the fledgling women's liberation movement.
